This is the third article in a series of FAQs about robotics. The first one and the second one can be found on this website. This article deals with the question: What is robotics vs. automation vs. robots?

In simple terms, “robotics” is the broader science; “robots” are physical units; and “automation” is the enabling technology. Moreover, “automation” is the umbrella term within which “robotics” is a sub-sector.

Though often used interchangeably, the terms robotics, robots, and automation refer to distinct – but overlapping – concepts.

Toyota Research Institute unveils breakthrough in Large Behavior Models that requires ‘80 percent less data’

Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has unveiled promising results from a large-scale study on a new class of AI systems called Large Behavior Models (LBMs), which could significantly accelerate the development of general-purpose robots capable of adapting to real-world tasks.

The research, published today, shows that a single LBM can learn hundreds of manipulation tasks and apply that knowledge to new challenges with up to 80 percent less data compared to traditional approaches.

While Level 3 autonomy continues to face regulatory and liability challenges in 2025, SAE Level 2+ ADAS is reshaping China’s automotive landscape, driven by vertically integrated supply chain solutions and declining hardware costs.

According to IDTechEx’s Passenger Car ADAS Market 2025-2045: Technology, Market Analysis, and Forecasts report, although the overall L2+ penetration rate across the entire Chinese market remains modest, a noteworthy trend is emerging among China’s new energy vehicle startups.

Chinese industrial robot makers challenge global giants as market expected to reach 649,000 units by 2030

China is the largest single industrial robot adopter, and the global demand for robots remains high. ABI Research, a global technology intelligence firm, forecasts shipments to grow from approximately 400,000 in 2024 to 649,000 by 2030, a steady compound annual growth rate of 7.4 percent.

The umbrella term, industrial robot, encompasses high payload, high repeatability robotic arms. These include SCARA robots, often utilized for assembly tasks, delta robots which excel at rapid picking, and Cartesian robots, which can be deployed for material handling tasks.

Industrial robots, the backbone of manufacturing economies, will continue to enjoy rising sales as geographic shifts in manufacturing trends begin to take root. Accordingly, revenues generated from industrial robot hardware sales are set to rise from $14.7 billion in 2024 to $22.6 billion by the end of the decade.
